A ROOM...

I think I'm turning into a senior citizen, as all I like doing is visiting gardens, taking pictures of flowers, then going for a cream tea. We went to Monk's House, the country getaway of Virginia and Leonard Woolf in East Sussex, on a typically rainy May bank holiday weekend. As we arrived in the tiny village of Rodmell, the skies cleared and a Manx cat bounded up to greet us.

Because it was so wet, there were hardly any other visitors to the house and garden. I had a good poke around the garden - so many sections, with roses tumbling and spilling around the house, lupins and tons of flowers in bloom near to it, a rectangular pond with a bench, then an orchard, a lawn for playing bowls overlooking the fields, the writing hut, a large vegetable garden next to the church. I love when gardens are sectioned like that, which takes real imagination and vision. Anyway I'll stop being a granny for a minute, going on about gardens. Still got some life in me yet.

What really, really got me at Monk's House was Virginia's bedroom. Separated from the rest of the house with its own external door onto the garden it was the most tranquil, calming space I could ever think of. Pink climbing roses covered the wall outside and most of the windows, the inside of the room had that perfectly calming arrangement, where someone with a strong eye has books and possessions and things that don't 'match' but everything is harmonious, everything flows. The importance of a room of one's own - had to say it. The privacy, the refuge. There was a man whose job it was to sit in there, probably to stop people having a nap on Virginia's bed, which was hard not to do. The photos below are of the exterior and interior of VW's bedroom.

SERVICES...

It's true, there is inspiration everywhere! This is the view from my favourite brutalist motorway service station 'somewhere in England.' While others dunk biscuits in their tea, text and read the paper at this nowhere land, I gaze out of the window and imagine various scenes of imaginary films being shot here.  It reminds me simultaneously of Twin Peaks and Let The Right One In (original Swedish version obviously) and I could imagine it standing in for some bleak Danish murder scene in The Killing. (Tangent: what do you think about Sarah Lund's new jumper in Series 3? I'm not sure about it.)

It has such a sinister romantic beauty to it, especially in the rain.

I always Instagram the view when I'm there and recently a friend found herself there by chance, sitting in exactly the same seat I'd been sitting in with the same view and recognised it from my photo. Strange things happen there...

THE SEA...

Before the great rains of April came, this happened.

Balmy weather, half a cider before lunch, days on the beach, shorts, sandals, binoculars, all the beach huts but a few still closed for the winter, bracing swims in the freezing sea (not me). And that was that.

SOLACE II...

I realise that by posting these pictures I'm at risk of finding myself on the PR mailing lists of The Sheep Herders' Association, Young Farmers and Cattle News (I already get sent anything and everything to do with horse racing, because I once mentioned a Shetland pony. For clarity's sake: I do not need to be kept up to date with all the sheep/farming news - though I wouldn't say no to a complimentary National Trust membership.)

Getting out into the countryside has been the best thing about this summer - inclement weather becomes interesting rather than bad, walking with friends, their kids, dogs, going to visit people's puppies - I know, not the usual LIB content but very much needed.

I tried to muster some enthusiasm for the usual subjects (see shoe post below) but in truth I only have pictures like this to show you at the moment. These only give a partial representation - I put these photos in to be developed in Lewisham last Monday afternoon. They were ready to collect an hour later but good old laziness got the better of me and (thankfully) I didn't go back. Everything is still strange - not just in central Lewisham but everywhere around here: shops boarded up, glaziers working overtime, everything very, very quiet apart from the occasional sirens. I never thought I'd be glad to hear a police siren. I'm always full of enthusiasm for the hood, but how to come to terms with living right in the middle of what last week very quickly turned into three riot/looting zones.

AE-1, I LIKE IT...

A couple of weeks ago I went down to the Dorset coast with the Canon AE-1. My photos are nothing to shout about, I was just playing around, but the satisfaction of winding that film on is completely addictive. The first picture is from an old roll I had developed, taken with Fujipro 400H I think last year, the rest were taken with Kodak Portra 160 that Elle very kindly sent me. The tones are so different - forgive me for being so late to the party on the analogue rediscovery front - well, I've had little dalliances with Lomos/Dianas but that never lasted long. I feel this might.

I like that the camera I'm now using is the same one that my dad used to take photos of me on holiday in the same place nearly 3 decades ago.

FLYING VISIT...

8 hours of driving in two days means packing light, a swim in the sea (no better way to tell your body it's still alive than by plunging it into icy cold waves), a sunburnt nose, cat foot snuggles with no danger of losing a toe, ice cold rosé, fresh crab and seabass (not pictured - food pics usually look gross on blogs) and realising this is precisely the correct time of the summer to re-read Bonjour Tristesse.

ONE SUNNY DAY...

Last Saturday was a lone, glimmering sunny day and I made the most of it.
