However, Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris has been getting big thumbs up from a lot of people whose taste in film I respect so I'm really looking forward to that. I never thought I'd see the day when I'd be excited about the new Woody Allen film. Except it has no UK release date - what! And Miranda July's new film The Future will be out (or maybe just shown at the BFI London film festival?) in er, November. So that's ONE FILM in a year to look forward to? Odd. Very, very odd.
But there is hope! Tonight on BBC HD (or rather tomorrow) at one o' clock in the morning there is a screening of Kinga Burza's first short film Candy, which will then be available to watch on BBC iPlayer for the following week. If you've seen the new issue of Lula you'll have seen the article about the film. Kinga Burza has directed music videos for Ladyhawke, Kate Nash, Patrick Wolf, La Roux and The Teenagers among others, and she directed this cute little film for Kate Spade earlier in the year. So yeah, Candy, a thirteen minute long film I'm interested in seeing, being screened in the middle of the night on TV. It's a start!
(p.s. If your internet connection isn't fast enough to watch it online in HD (hello me) you can download the BBC iplayer to your desktop, then download the film and watch it.)

waiting to see all three...;)
I've never heard of candy, I feel like I should though. I'm really lucky that my local 'boutique' cinema has great films. But I'm generally disappointed and bored with the mainstream films on offer, and then I feel bad because it makes me sound like snob, which I'm not. I guess I just wish that mainstream films didn't aim so low these days.
Hila - mine usually does, but I guess it has to show the films that are available to show - which is why it seems so weird that it's only showing blockbuster type films now. Is that really all that they have to choose from, or would they go out of business otherwise I wonder... I have no qualms about refusing to go and see Bad Teacher and its ilk - life's too short to waste another 2 hours!
i share this problem. not sure what the solution is. new york has too few art houses, but fortunately the number is growing. perhaps a trip to paris, where it seems every film ever made is showing on some screen in the city? xo bb
Oh gosh, this is exactly what happened to me!!where all this cinema excitment has gone??let me think what i have seen do far............oh here it is, last year polish blockbuster (I'm Polish;) called, erhm, How to get rid of cellulite. The new oeuvre of bunch of funny comedies providers, sadly this time it turnoud to be a total waste of 2 hours and eight quid of my hard earned money. So shall we go back to the classics on DVD?? Arhh, ok , there is a new movie I wanted badly to see, but i think is not realsed yet in the UK, Jane Eyre (it remains a secret why such a BRITISH movie was released abroad first!!??) anyway hope you will enjoy Candy, im going to watch it now, i think the director is Polish:) Just to add- I really like your blog, have been following for a while:) best, dominika
I can heartily recommend Terrence Malick's 'Tree of Life' which, I believe, is due out in the UK on 8th July. Really breathtaking AND I didn't loathe Brad Pitt in it.
Isn't the girl in this Candy film the little one who acted Keira off of the screen in 'Never Let Me Go'?
BB - I'm not sure if they really aren't showing good little films anywhere in London, or I've just stopped being able to find them in the usual places. It could be either!
Dominika - yes, Jane Eyre - that will be worth watching, with Mia Wasikowska, I'm sure it should be out here soon. And yes, the director of Candy was born in Poland, raised in Australia. And thank you!
Anna - oh, that's not too long to wait. Of course, of course Terrence Malick saves the day! And yes, the girl is the very same, though in Candy I was in awe of the male character's portrayal - he can't have been more than 18.
