BOW AMNESTY...

I've been undertaking a major upgrade of my lingerie wardrobe and in doing so, have discovered exactly what I like and dislike. (More on that another time. Boythongs: why do these exist?)

While I like delicate lace and silk, the one thing I CANNOT stand is the little fake bows that are plonked on most underwear, even really expensive brands. They're not even real bows - just bits of ribbon trim folded into a bow shape and tacked to the middle of a bra or knickers, which does nothing except make a small lump in the line of your clothes. Sometimes there's more than a bow - there might be a pearl, or in the most hilarious case on one of my recent online purchases, a fake enamel locket with the Eiffel Tower on it. I like Paris A LOT but I don't need that dangling from the middle of my bra. There was no mention of it in the description and you couldn't see it in the photo - in fact I don't think it was IN the photo, which makes me think there is some kind of automated process that just churns these things out randomly and attaches them at the end of production, like a games arcade grabber arm that just pulls them out of a barrel and sticks them on.

One thing I do like however, is cutting those stupid things off. The satisfaction derived is, I imagine, on a par with how Lola feels when she methodically pulls the legs off a spider one by one. There, much better. Here are some I removed earlier:

oh man, the worst is when there are little bows (or possibly worse, daisies) going all along the bra straps! I don't mind some pretty edging, but attaching all kinds of other things bugs me. I've noticed it a lot on Simone Perele bras, which are gorgeous otherwise.

Somehow these bring Frankie Howard to mind . Removal seems an excellent idea !

aw this reminds me of my first-ever bra which inexplicable had two small fabric criss-crossed TENNIS RACKETS on it.

Oh this is so true!
I spend far too much time looking for lovely under things that aren't covered in unwanted bits and bobs.

You have just articulated something that has always subconsciously annoyed me! In fact such silly embellishments seem to be a bit of a contagion across many types of clothing...and if designers aren't busy adding to things, they're taking them away...what's with the recent cut-out trend!? Anyway I better stop there or this will turn into a right rant! PS: Just found your blog and it's rather lovely :)

Mia - you know what I'm talking about. x

Anon - daisies! Cut them off.

S&S - yes it's a bit ooh mother or whatevs!

Jean - your first bra was so sporty! It clearly needed the tennis rackets to confirm this fact. x

Sight - small scissors, unpicker, surgeon's eye - cut them all off!

THM - As they say, simplicity is the hardest thing to achieve in design. Much easier to plonk something on or cut something out. And thank you!

Like I said on twitter, the Eiffel bits are not accidental...

Oh my gosh, the Eiffel tower! That is hilarious. I particularly hate the way lingerie designers like to throw bits of diamanté at otherwise delightful underwear. There is a landfill site somewhere just overflowing with snipped off diamanté detailing...

I don't like them either- or the way they wrinkle up over time if you don't cut them off. The tours are quite cute though!

Those Eiffel towers really look like the charms you'd get as a child with Barbies or dolls and that would never do what they were supposed to do, or would break quickly. It's like, hm, 'Now you have breasts, just like Barbie! And you can still have the ridiculous useless gadget-thing that used to come with Barbie!'

Camille - exactly! That's exactly how I feel about them.

Absolutely spot on. I am starting to make lingerie and the working title is 'No bows'. The Eiffel tower is genius.
